How it works
A home improvement calculator helps you estimate exactly how much material to buy for your next DIY project. Whether you're painting a room, pouring a concrete patio, laying tile, building a fence, or installing sod, knowing the right quantity prevents costly over-ordering and frustrating mid-project supply runs. Simply select your project type, enter your measurements, and get precise material estimates instantly.
What makes this tool different: Most home improvement sites either sell materials and give biased estimates, or have slow, ad-cluttered calculators that are unusable on mobile. CalcInstant's home improvement calculator gives you the math straight — no bias, no signup, and it works fully offline in your browser. All 11 project calculators update in real time and are designed for job site use on any phone.
When to use a material calculator
Use this tool before every trip to the home improvement store. Contractors use material calculators to write accurate bids and avoid costly change orders. DIY homeowners use them to budget projects and avoid buying excess material that goes to waste. Even experienced builders double-check their math with a calculator before placing a large order — a single math error on a concrete slab can cost hundreds of dollars in wasted material.
Painting a room
Most rooms need 1-2 gallons of paint for two coats. The paint calculator accounts for doors and windows, so you don't overbuy. A 12x12 bedroom with one door and one window typically needs about 1.5 gallons.
Pouring concrete
Concrete is sold by the cubic yard — one cubic yard fills about a 10x10 slab 4 inches deep. Always add 10% waste for spillage and uneven ground. Most ready-mix companies have a minimum order of 1 yard.
Installing flooring
Laminate, vinyl, and hardwood are sold per box, each covering 20-25 square feet. Add 5-15% waste depending on your room shape and installation pattern. Order one extra box for future repairs.
Laying tile
Tiles are sold by the piece and per box. Divide your area by the tile's coverage to get the count, then add 10-15% for cuts and breakage. Diagonal patterns and large-format tiles need more waste margin.
Mulching and gravel
Landscape materials are sold by the cubic yard. One yard of mulch covers 100 sq ft at 3 inches deep. Gravel is sold by the ton — multiply cubic yards by 1.4 for approximate weight. Order delivery for any amount over 1 yard.
Building a fence
Posts, rails, and pickets each need separate calculations. Posts go every 6-8 feet, with sections between. Pickets are spaced with a small gap (typically 1 inch) for airflow. A standard 100-foot fence needs about 18 posts and 200 pickets.
Roofing
Roofing is measured in squares (100 sq ft each). Multiply your home's footprint by the pitch factor to account for the slope. Three bundles of shingles cover one square. Always add 10% for ridge caps and waste.
Drywall
Standard 4x8 sheets cover 32 sq ft each. Include the ceiling if you're finishing the whole room. 4x12 sheets reduce joints but require two people to install. Add 10% for waste from cuts around doors and windows.
Sod
Sod is typically sold in rolls covering 10 sq ft each, stacked on pallets of about 50 rolls (500 sq ft). Install within 24 hours of delivery and water thoroughly within 30 minutes of laying.
Wallpaper
Standard wallpaper rolls cover about 28 sq ft (single) or 56 sq ft (double). Account for pattern matching — high-pattern-repeat designs can waste 20-30% of each roll. Buy an extra roll to ensure dye lot matching.
