How it works
The calculator walks forward (or backward) from your start date, checking each day: weekend? Public holiday? If either, the day is skipped. Easter and moveable holidays use the computus formula, "nth weekday of month" rules like Labor Day are computed dynamically, and the observed substitute when Christmas falls on a Saturday is handled automatically. The calendar stays accurate for any year without manual updates.
The Subtract mode works backward from a deadline. If a document is due 15 July and you must submit 5 business days before, set the direction to Subtract and enter the deadline as the start date. The calculator skips backward from 15 July, passing weekends and holidays, and lands on your real submission date. I use this more than the Add mode for court filing deadlines.
Common mistakes people make with business days
Assuming a "business day" means the same thing everywhere. In the US, business days are Monday through Friday, and federal holidays are excluded. In the UK, the weekend is also Saturday-Sunday but the bank holiday list is different. In some Middle Eastern countries, the work week runs Sunday through Thursday. If your contract specifies "business days" without defining which country's rules apply, you are heading for a dispute. This calculator lets you pick the country, but make sure your contract defines the jurisdiction.
Forgetting that holidays change the calendar date significantly. Adding 30 business days starting 20 December in the US: Christmas and New Year's both fall in that window, so the end date is roughly 7 February rather than 1 February. I have seen contracts with "30 business days from signing" that the parties signed in late December, and neither side realized the deadline would land in February rather than January. That extra month matters for payment terms and delivery timelines.
Using 5 business days = 1 calendar week. Most people approximate by adding 1.5 calendar days per business day. But if a holiday falls in the period, that ratio breaks. A 10-business-day window crossing Thanksgiving in the US requires 16 or 17 calendar days, not 14.
